In May of 2004 I received an email from a Firefighter in California, a Mr. Phil Zidek. He has been involved in RC helicopters for a long time. He wanted to create a tribute to his fallen brothers in New York.
Phil’s father told me of a comment that was made when Phil went back to NY for the memorial service. The day of the service it was raining. One of the many firefighters there said “it hasn’t rained in weeks, why does it have to rain today?” A small girl, maybe 9 or 10 walked up to the firefighter and said... “Mr. fireman? That’s not rain, those are the tears from the angels crying.”
When Phil asked about creating this tribute, I was hesitant; I knew that doing any images of the WTC would be difficult to acheive without being offensive. However, as this was something that affected me so deeply, as it did with so many millions of others, I decided that I would do it.
The main images were pictures I had seen, but they simply represented what I wanted to acheive so perfectly I used them. The fire in behind the main image on the front of the canopy was something I really hesitated to do, but I thought the fire represented a fireman, it represents the passion of human life, it represents heat, and it is in this case meant to represent that very day, how it will be burned into our hearts and souls forever.
